Though 2018 brought challenges and triumphs one of the things that I decided to share moving into the new year is my love for working with Second Story. I have been working with them for quite a while and it has impacted me immensely! Their mission and vision are as follows:

“Second Story transforms the lives of children, youth and their families by providing safe havens and opportunities for them to grow and thrive. Our programs provide support at critical turning points in their lives.
The vision of Second Story is of a community in which all young people are safe, live in a nurturing environment and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Founded in 1972 as “Alternative House,” Second Story transforms the lives of children and youth, helping them stay safe, make positive decisions, achieve educational success, and overcome personal crises. We offer children, youth and families hope for brighter futures by providing counseling, shelter and neighborhood-based support.”

In short, they provide a safe place for children and young adults that do not have anywhere to go. This may include children that have been subject to abuse both physical and sexual, neglect and so many other things that they need to be protected from. This hits so near and dear to each of us in the community. These children are right here in our own community.

To give back to this organization I dedicate my time every 6 weeks and donate my services in an effort to encourage and offer love to these young people. This experience has made me very aware of the reality these kids live with every day. They are incredible people, they have hopes, dreams and goals. It is an honor to be able to work with them. The benefit is definitely mutually beneficial. It’s been amazing to be a safe place for these young people, and it reminds me that as an adult it is so important to be available, to be present, to communicate with these children. This will tear down their walls and allow them to trust again. Though it’s sad to know that these circumstances happen in our community, we can be the solution and offer support!

Unfortunately sex trafficking, violence and abuse is a horrible reality. These things can impact anyone in any socioeconomic class. Which is why we should all get involved! If you would like to donate to Second Story or get involved click HERE and contact them. You can make a difference this year!
