Skin Care Do’s and Don’ts A basic guide to help you!

When taking on a new client the first thing I ask them is about their daily habits. Treatments that we provide can not repair the bad habits our clients have created. Here are a few common issues I have spotted and how to remedy them!

First of all, you need to ensure you are drinking enough water. Your water consumption should be your weight divided by two in ounces. For example, someone who weighs 150 lbs should be drinking 75 ounces per day. The assumption used to be you should be drinking 8 glasses per day, but that is not enough. Think about a plant, if you gave it all the vitamins and sun it needed, but did not give it any water it would die. The same is true for us as people. Water is so important not only for your skin, but it also helps with other health issues.

Next, a very common issue is your hygiene routine. When washing your face make sure you wash your hands with soap and water before you touch your face. Your hands have many germs and dirt that can cause breakouts and other issues with your skin. When you are washing your face be sure to use only the tips of your fingers. The skin on your face, especially around your eyes is very delicate. Our hands are very strong and can damage that skin if you are being too aggressive. Make sure you are using the tips of your fingers and massaging your skin in small circles.

When you go to the gym make sure you wash your face before and after. Working out with makeup on is very bad for your skin. It creates blocked pores which will lead to breakouts and inflammation. Also, make sure you are wiping your machines before you use them. Frequently, we touch our faces unconsciously which can cause issues with your skin. Some gym equipment can even have staph bacteria on it, so a quick wipe down can protect you from lots of dirt and bacteria!

Finally, the sun is one of the most controversial topics out there. It can be so beneficial if you expose yourself at the right time and duration. I highly recommend taking a walk early in the morning without sun protection. This will give you Vitamin D and other nutrients just from being exposed to the sun at a time where it is not the strongest. Many sunscreens have a lot of chemicals in them, so be sure to find one that is more natural to block the UV rays or stay out of the sun when it is hottest.

This wraps up my basic dos and don’ts. Be sure you are eating healthy, nutritious food as well. So many times our skin issues can either be helped or hurt by our small daily routines. I partner with my clients to ensure results, not just in my office, but when you are on your own as well. Come visit me sometime so we can work together and help build your confidence with your skin!
