Hyaluronic acid is one of the most recognizable ingredients in skincare today. You will find it in serums, moisturizers, professional skincare products, eye treatments, and medical aesthetic procedures.
But despite its popularity, there is still a great deal of misunderstanding about what hyaluronic acid actually is.
Is it really an acid? Where is it found in the body? What does it do? And does the purity of a product—or even the container it comes in—really matter?
Let’s take a closer look.
First: Why Is It Called an “Acid”?
The name hyaluronic acid can be misleading.
Unlike glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid. It does not work by dissolving dead skin cells or peeling the skin.
Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan (HA), is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan—a large carbohydrate molecule made of repeating sugar units.
The word “acid” refers to its chemical structure, which contains groups capable of behaving as acids. However, under the normal conditions of the human body and in many cosmetic formulations, hyaluronic acid exists largely in an ionized form.
In other words, the word acid in its name does not mean that it behaves like the exfoliating acids commonly used in skincare.
Hyaluronic acid’s primary role is not exfoliation. It is hydration, lubrication, tissue support, and maintaining the environment around our cells.
Hyaluronic Acid Is Naturally Found in the Body
One of the most fascinating things about hyaluronic acid is that our bodies produce it naturally.
It is found throughout many tissues, including:

- Joints and synovial fluid
- Cartilage
- Connective tissue
- The extracellular matrix surrounding our cells
In the skin, hyaluronic acid is particularly important in the dermis, where it contributes to the hydrated environment surrounding connective-tissue components.
It is not an artificial substance that our skin simply “recognizes.” It is a molecule that naturally belongs in the human body.
What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do in the Body?
Think of hyaluronic acid as one of the body’s natural water-management and tissue-support molecules.
It helps hold water
Hyaluronic acid has a strong affinity for water. Its molecular structure allows it to bind and retain water, helping maintain hydration within tissues.
It helps lubricate joints
Hyaluronic acid is an important component of synovial fluid, the fluid found around our joints.
Its viscosity contributes to lubrication and helps joints move smoothly.
It supports the extracellular matrix
Our cells live within a complex environment called the extracellular matrix.
Hyaluronic acid is an important component of this environment and contributes to tissue organization and cellular interactions.
It participates in tissue repair
Hyaluronic acid is involved in processes associated with wound healing, tissue remodeling, and cellular signaling.
Interestingly, its biological effects can vary according to its molecular size. Different molecular weights can behave differently within tissues.
It is naturally present in the eye
Hyaluronic acid is also found in the vitreous humor of the eye, where its water-binding properties contribute to the structure and physical characteristics of the tissue.
What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do for the Skin?
This is where hyaluronic acid becomes particularly interesting in skincare.
The skin naturally contains hyaluronic acid, but its amount and distribution change over time. Aging and environmental factors can also affect the skin’s ability to maintain hydration.
Topically applied hyaluronic acid can help support the skin’s moisture balance.
It Attracts and Retains Water
Hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic, meaning it has an affinity for water.
When applied to the skin, it can bind water and contribute to a more hydrated skin surface.
This can temporarily make the skin appear:
- Smoother
- Softer
- More supple
- Plumper
- More hydrated
Hydrated skin can also make fine lines appear less noticeable because the outer layers of the skin become more hydrated.
Molecular Size Matters
Not all hyaluronic acid behaves exactly the same way.
Hyaluronic acid can be produced in different molecular weights, and the size of the molecule influences how it behaves on and within the outer layers of the skin.
High-molecular-weight HA tends to remain closer to the surface, where it can form a moisturizing film and help reduce water loss.
Lower-molecular-weight forms are smaller and can interact differently with the outer layers of the skin.
Some modern formulations intentionally combine different molecular weights to provide different hydration benefits.
This is why simply looking at the percentage of hyaluronic acid on a label does not tell the whole story.
The molecular weight, concentration, formulation, stability, purity, and intended use all matter.
Can Hyaluronic Acid Cause a Reaction?
Hyaluronic acid itself is generally well tolerated and has a long history of use in dermatology and medicine.
However, any skincare product can potentially cause irritation or an allergic or sensitivity reaction.
This is where the ingredient list becomes important.
A product marketed as a “hyaluronic acid serum” may contain many additional ingredients, including:
- Preservatives
- Fragrance
- Botanical extracts
- Alcohol
- Other active ingredients
- Stabilizers
- Solvents
- Surfactants
- Other moisturizing agents
Sometimes a person may believe they are reacting to hyaluronic acid when the actual problem is another ingredient in the formulation.
This is one reason why a simple, transparent formulation can be valuable—especially for people with sensitive or reactive skin.
Of course, “simple” does not mean that every supporting ingredient should be removed. A water-based product generally needs appropriate preservation and stabilization to remain safe and effective.
The goal is not to have the fewest ingredients possible.
The goal is for every ingredient to have a purpose.
Does “Pure Hyaluronic Acid” Mean Better?
The word “pure” sounds reassuring, but it deserves some explanation.
High-purity hyaluronic acid as a raw material is certainly desirable. However, a finished skincare product cannot necessarily consist of nothing but hyaluronic acid.
A well-designed product may require other ingredients to:
- Maintain stability
- Control pH
- Prevent microbial contamination
- Create an appropriate texture
- Protect the formulation
- Maintain its effectiveness over time
Therefore, instead of asking only:
“How pure is it?”
It is better to ask:
“What is in it, and why is it there?”
Ingredient transparency is important.
A quality product should have a formulation that makes sense from both a cosmetic and scientific perspective.
Glass vs. Plastic: Why the Container Matters
When we talk about the quality of a skincare product, we often focus only on what is inside the bottle.
But the container is also part of the product’s environment.
A beautifully formulated serum can still be affected by exposure to light, oxygen, heat, moisture, repeated handling, and the material surrounding the formulation.
Why We Prefer Glass
For a high-quality hyaluronic acid product, glass can be an excellent choice of packaging.
Glass is highly resistant to chemical interaction and provides an effective barrier between the product and its external environment. Unlike plastic, glass does not consist of polymers that may, depending on the formulation and packaging material, have the potential for interaction or migration of certain substances.
This is one reason glass has traditionally been valued for products where purity, stability, and minimizing contact between the formulation and the container are important considerations.
Glass also does not readily absorb ingredients from a formulation and provides a strong barrier against many external contaminants.
What About Plastic?
Not all plastics are the same.
Modern cosmetic packaging can be manufactured from plastics specifically selected for compatibility with particular formulations. An appropriately designed plastic container can therefore be safe and effective.
However, when we have the choice between a well-designed glass container and conventional plastic packaging, glass offers an excellent, inert option for protecting the integrity of the product.
The type of plastic, the formulation, storage conditions, and dispensing system all matter. An airless plastic package, for example, may provide excellent protection against repeated exposure to air and contamination.
So we should not say that all plastic is bad or that glass automatically makes a product better.
The more accurate principle is:
The packaging should protect the purity, stability, and integrity of the formulation.
For products where maintaining a clean and carefully controlled formulation is important, glass is a very compelling packaging choice.

Hyaluronic acid is much more than a trendy skincare ingredient.
It is a naturally occurring molecule that is already present throughout our bodies and plays important roles in hydration, lubrication, tissue structure, and the environment surrounding our cells.
In the skin, it helps maintain hydration and contributes to a healthy, hydrated appearance.
When used topically, however, the results depend on much more than simply seeing the words “hyaluronic acid” on a bottle.
When choosing a product, consider:
What form of hyaluronic acid is being used?
What is its molecular weight?
How concentrated is it?
What other ingredients have been added—and why?
Is the formulation properly preserved and stable?
Does the packaging protect the product from light, oxygen, and contamination?
And perhaps most importantly:
Does the product make scientific sense—not just marketing sense?
